Artist Statement
I have always loved fairy tales, fables and myths and vividly remember my father reading
Grimm’s Fairy Tales to me as a child. Even at a young age, I could feel that there was a life lesson or maybe a roadmap for living hidden within the story. Their universal appeal and archetypal characters speak to the collective consciousness that unites us as humans.
My artwork develops as I contemplate and ponder fleeting thoughts, concerns, or concepts of the world around me. When an idea becomes “stuck” in my mind, I try to analyze my fascination with it by bringing together images that illustrate how it makes me feel. The writings of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, combined with my love of stories, inspired me to delve deeper into my unconscious, explore my internal world and translate those thoughts into photomontage images. I try to emulate the warm, graphic qualities of antique bookplates and gravures by working in sepia tones and adding texture screens.
Although these images are very personal, I am delighted when my photomontages appeal to viewers who might find a different interpretation based on their own life experience.
